๐About Can Dogs Eat Salmon?
Cooked salmon is one of the most nutritious foods you can offer your dog. It is an outstanding source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, which provide extensive health benefits including reduced inflammation, improved heart health, enhanced brain function, healthy skin and coat, and immune system support. Salmon also provides high-quality protein, vitamins B12 and D, selenium, and potassium. The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon can be particularly beneficial for dogs with allergies, skin conditions, or joint problems such as arthritis. However, there is one absolutely critical safety rule: salmon must always be thoroughly cooked before feeding to dogs. Raw or undercooked salmon can contain the parasite Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which causes salmon poisoning disease. This disease is found primarily in Pacific Northwest salmon and is almost always fatal in dogs if left untreated. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and discharge from the eyes and nose, typically appearing within 6 to 10 days of consumption. Cooking salmon to an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit kills the parasite. Baked, grilled (without seasoning), or poached salmon are all excellent preparation methods. Always serve plain without butter, oil, lemon, garlic, onion, or seasonings. Remove all bones, as salmon bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries. Canned salmon in water is also acceptable.
