Coffee is extremely toxic to dogs and must never be given to them in any form. Coffee contains caffeine, a methylxanthine compound that dogs metabolize much more slowly than humans. This means caffeine reaches dangerous concentrations in a dog's system and remains there for much longer. The toxic dose of caffeine for dogs is approximately 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, but clinical signs can appear at much lower doses. A single cup of coffee contains approximately 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is enough to cause significant toxicity in a small to medium-sized dog. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning typically appear within 1 to 2 hours of ingestion and include restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, muscle tremors, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated body temperature, and seizures. In severe cases, caffeine toxicity leads to cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, and death. All coffee products are dangerous, including brewed coffee, espresso, instant coffee, coffee grounds, coffee beans, and decaffeinated coffee (which still contains some caffeine). Coffee-flavored foods and drinks, energy drinks, and caffeine supplements are equally hazardous. Coffee grounds and whole beans are particularly dangerous because they contain a more concentrated amount of caffeine than brewed coffee. If your dog ingests any coffee or caffeine-containing product, treat it as an emergency. Contact your veterinarian or animal poison control immediately.
